Look, on the face of it. The history of Xbox has been up and down. There is no gaming company out there that gets everything right. Not Sony or Nintendo. But what I will say is, every company learns something from before. If Xbox has learned anything over the years it’s that Sony’s portfolio of games is driving the huge engagement levels in which that platform has. Look at the success of Spiderman 2.
Xbox might not be purchasing Nintendo outright. But their partnership in the future could shape some good collaborations to come in the future. That much is true, and for Xbox, well the success of Starfield in September has really shown that if you give players the right kind of content. No matter what, people will jump in and become more active no matter if it’s on an Xbox or PC or by any means of accessing that content.
With the Actvision deal now wrapped up. Microsoft can turn its intention on its own portfolio of content that it has coming in 2024. People are out there still doubting Microsoft and Xbox. But to be honest, those same people are probably thinking this is the same Microsoft that messed up the Xbox One era. If anything, Phil Spencer has steadied the ship and it’s on course to get to its destination in good time. The journey that Xbox has been on, from nearly dying as a brand to its revival under Game Pass and now having more than double the studios of PlayStation. This just shows that Microsoft is not playing around anymore. The games are coming, the hype is there, and the three way competition is only ever going to be good for the industry and what it represents.
But is it a three way competition? Could more companies enter the arena in the future? I think so. You only have to look at Netflix’s involvement. We don’t know what gaming will look like in the future.
You may say, well how can gobbling up half of the industry be good? Well, there’s no definitive answer in that because if we could predict the future of where these studios would be without Microsoft and now being part of Xbox Studios. Then we’d all be not only rich people but well informed also. But what we can agree on will be the fact that Microsoft is pushing to really fight all corners of gaming for good reason. Whether it be through Game Pass, Cloud Streaming, and fantastic games to come. The future hasn’t ever been brighter. It’s a position that started years ago. The journey hasn’t even concluded yet as Microsoft wants to even go further.
If anything, this shows that the journey we’ve been on is far from over. Xbox is just getting started, in more ways than one. It has fundamental reasons to protect some of the biggest properties in gaming with development studios that all wanted in on acquisition. The technology that Microsoft has is really going to evolve gaming in the future. I truly believe that, even if some people are not so sure. We can all agree on one thing, Xbox is in the best position that it is has ever been in right now.
