What's Next for PlayStation?

What’s Next for PlayStation?

For something that is pretty niche. It was always going to be difficult for Sony to gain momentum on a PSVR2 hardware. But back when it launched, PlayStation fans who bought the original were ready to give Sony their money based on their track record of supporting the previous platform. For some reason that hasn’t happened this time around.

Everything at this moment in time feels a bit off at Sony for some reason. There are just so many negatives and it’s difficult to really pinpoint exactly why they’re allowing PSVR2 to just pretty much lose any sort of momentum it could of had with a full support and software to go with it. It just doesn’t seem like there is any pathway here on anything anymore. A proper launch and steps to continue with support. It’s just been so mishandled so far.

I don’t want to be negative, I’ve grown up as a PlayStation fan since the beginning and owned the 5 and others. What I will say though, after Jim Ryan leaves. Even if they’re commercially hitting their strides. They’re way off in terms of consumer satisfaction. If you really think Spiderman 2 is good enough for this year alone. I question that viewpoint. In fact, I question every viewpoint that says that PlayStation has been as good as the last generation. They haven’t. There is a reason why they’re bringing new management to oversee the remainder of the transition period. Who they pick to lead PlayStation going forward is going to be crucial.

PlayStation have launched some good exclusives in the past three years. The same point remains. Everything comes at a cost. Because at every turn there have just been some things that could have been handled better in every department because they’ve chosen to run on their ambitions of market conditions and try and go for the popular live service. It’s a failing decision so far. Which is why delays and lack of information is coming out.

It’s just so frustrating to see Sony this generation the way they’re leading the charge on pretty much every wrong decision you can make. Whether it be price rises or just poor planning and letting good hardware go to die.

You’re probably wondering, why should you care? You’re an Xbox and Nintendo gamer these days. Sure, I’d agree, but if you want to see the competition continue to be strong by making strong pro-consumer moves and ones that don’t hinder the competitive nature of the industry. I don’t think you know how this all works. Because we need all three companies being the best versions of themselves that they can be. That way, we all win as consumers because we have more choices, better prices, and the most important thing is more innovative content and not just your bog-standard sequels.

Will PlayStation turn it around at The Game Awards and what exactly is their next phase? All legitimate questions that need answering.

Xbox Has Reformed for Good Reason

Xbox Has Reformed for Good Reason

Who would have thought that Xbox would be adding the likes of PlayStation and Nintendo to their community? Of course, how they do this is through the games they’ll be publishing now through Xbox Studios with third-party. It really is becoming a company that focuses on its reach for players everywhere. It’s almost as though Microsoft is saying, even if you don’t want us to acquire you we will work with you on games and publishers we acquire anyway.

It’s simply a win-win for Microsoft. Because they’ll almost certainly be accumulating player bases from franchises that are some of the biggest in gaming entertainment. Personally, as a prime Xbox and Nintendo player these days. I welcome the competition. I think Phil Spencer said it best in an interview I watched a few weeks back. Microsoft are now in a position with Xbox where they’re the custodians of so many franchises that they need to handle in such a way that major care is given. This brings us to the management shake-ups recently.

I think the Sarah Bond position especially is the right decision because she brings the right character and vision to the company. She has pretty much been handling Xbox Game Pass for a while. Which has come on leaps and bounds since it launched. I mean, Xbox fans are consuming some really good content at the end of this year.

That focus on a major game every three months takes a point and is completely feasible. Especially with the production of games they now have in the pipeline. Restructuring their whole company personnel to adapt to the rising amount of workload that is going to need to be shared to continue to make decisions in the best interest of Xbox. It’s a smart move and certifies that it’s a team effort.

There’s even more possibility of more to come in terms of acquisitions. What I will say though, is this signifies the best interest of the Xbox community as a whole primarily. But it’s also a start of reaching out to other players on other platforms and saying jump in and come and join us. We’re building momentum and we’re heading in the right direction.

After so much discontent over the years, Xbox’s future looks brighter than ever on all fronts. Even if you don’t necessarily play on an Xbox.

Has PlayStation Lost Its Soul A Little?

Has PlayStation Lost Its Soul A Little?

The rapid success PlayStation is having commercially cannot be understated. Like, the numbers are crazy, and well earned. But at what cost? I mean, don’t get me wrong, PlayStation has always been an incredible product with great games and it’s cemented its legacy into the heart of every player who has grown up as part of that. Including me. It has a huge player base and some of the strongest and most opinionated loyalists you will ever meet. But there comes a point where I have to ask the question. At what cost?

Sony has just gotten so expensive on every level. We’re even being told now that players who buy a physical drive might need to download something with their next console revision. It won’t be a problem for many. After all, many enjoy PlayStation games and all it brings with that. I get that, but what we need to get out there is that we cannot excuse the inexcusable sometimes. Every company has things we shouldn’t accept or agree with. Sony is no different.

I even kind of feel that Sony themselves are aware of the problems of their own direction. Especially with live services and everything else, but they’re commercially living it large right now. We’ve all learned how there seems to be a different path they’re taking. But it’s bigger than that I believe. We’re starting to see big people move on from PlayStation.

I feel PlayStation has lost its soul a little. It’s getting to the point where they’re becoming unrecognisable from what they once were. You could argue that gaming as a whole is getting like that and not much of any innovation. I used to love seeing PlayStation leading the communication front. When will we see that again? Xbox and Nintendo are leading that distinction these days.

I keep taking the leap of faith like many PlayStation fans. I guess our concerns will be met eventually won’t they? It’s just hard to believe in Sony right now with all the negatives recently. But time will tell. Let’s hope they really are holding things back for that Pro console and that The Game Awards really showcases some great stuff from Sony as well. I believe, it’s time.

Xbox is in The Best Position It's Ever Been In

Xbox is in The Best Position It’s Ever Been In

Look, on the face of it. The history of Xbox has been up and down. There is no gaming company out there that gets everything right. Not Sony or Nintendo. But what I will say is, every company learns something from before. If Xbox has learned anything over the years it’s that Sony’s portfolio of games is driving the huge engagement levels in which that platform has. Look at the success of Spiderman 2.

Xbox might not be purchasing Nintendo outright. But their partnership in the future could shape some good collaborations to come in the future. That much is true, and for Xbox, well the success of Starfield in September has really shown that if you give players the right kind of content. No matter what, people will jump in and become more active no matter if it’s on an Xbox or PC or by any means of accessing that content.

With the Actvision deal now wrapped up. Microsoft can turn its intention on its own portfolio of content that it has coming in 2024. People are out there still doubting Microsoft and Xbox. But to be honest, those same people are probably thinking this is the same Microsoft that messed up the Xbox One era. If anything, Phil Spencer has steadied the ship and it’s on course to get to its destination in good time. The journey that Xbox has been on, from nearly dying as a brand to its revival under Game Pass and now having more than double the studios of PlayStation. This just shows that Microsoft is not playing around anymore. The games are coming, the hype is there, and the three way competition is only ever going to be good for the industry and what it represents.

But is it a three way competition? Could more companies enter the arena in the future? I think so. You only have to look at Netflix’s involvement. We don’t know what gaming will look like in the future.

You may say, well how can gobbling up half of the industry be good? Well, there’s no definitive answer in that because if we could predict the future of where these studios would be without Microsoft and now being part of Xbox Studios. Then we’d all be not only rich people but well informed also. But what we can agree on will be the fact that Microsoft is pushing to really fight all corners of gaming for good reason. Whether it be through Game Pass, Cloud Streaming, and fantastic games to come. The future hasn’t ever been brighter. It’s a position that started years ago. The journey hasn’t even concluded yet as Microsoft wants to even go further.

If anything, this shows that the journey we’ve been on is far from over. Xbox is just getting started, in more ways than one. It has fundamental reasons to protect some of the biggest properties in gaming with development studios that all wanted in on acquisition. The technology that Microsoft has is really going to evolve gaming in the future. I truly believe that, even if some people are not so sure. We can all agree on one thing, Xbox is in the best position that it is has ever been in right now.

Ubisoft is In Love With The Cloud

Ubisoft is In Love With The Cloud

Ubisoft has always supported new platforms. They were one of the first to support Google Stadia back in the day when that was around. Now they’re foreseeing a future that most of us right now don’t believe is even possible. Of course, things can change. We all know how digital has been embraced by the masses. The problem is the cloud is still pretty new and all these companies that are trying to get us to use it. Know one thing. Its uptake is pitiful, to say the least.

But Ubisoft is behind it, they see this big future that we’re not seeing right now. Sony has its new PlayStation Portal handheld coming out. Are we a generation behind on the cloud? Probably. I think so. Microsoft clearly has something planned that involves the cloud with its next hardware. How it utilizes it will be key. But also on top of that, it’s how all our broadband connections improve in the future too.

The problem we have right now is that most internet connections are just not that very good. It’s clear the cloud can perform well, but until it is absolutely triumphant in terms of non-existent lag. I find it very hard myself, to foresee a future where the cloud is the primary platform of gaming. There is a future for it, without a doubt. That will very much depend on the advancement in the technology of the cloud and how they can make it work seamlessly as a PC or a console does.

Ubisoft is taking more of a punt on this than pretty much anything they’ve done before. It’s going to be interesting how they get everyone onboard and if that will even be possible. I always think to myself in these situations. Is it the cloud we are really interested in right now as gamers? Or are there more important things that could be happening like updates on Ubisoft titles such as Splinter Cell, Rayman, and last but certainly not least Beyond Good and Evil 2?

The day the cloud becomes the norm for the majority of gamers out there will be an event in itself. That’s for sure. How do you sell something to the masses that seems so unappealing right now? It’ll be interesting how PlayStation Portal sells that’s for sure.

Cloud will only ever be at the forefront of our attention when all of the issues have been erased from the history books. Until then, I think we should just let these companies continue to improve the technology of the cloud. While also, sitting back and just enjoying the here and now. Why worry about something that could be so far away anyway? This technology will probably be ready when the next generation of gamers enters the lobby after all.

Jim Ryan of PlayStation Retires

Jim Ryan of PlayStation Retires

The narrative will say Jim Ryan wasn’t a good PlayStation CEO. It will be around his failed attempts to battle Microsoft in court and his demands for Bethesda to release on PlayStation. It will be about Call of Duty, which he has secured for the next 10 years. Whatever your thoughts about Jim Ryan. His direction has led PlayStation to a really successful period commercially speaking. One could argue, that he’s been riding the wave of success of the PS4 and I’d agree with you there. But fundamentally, PlayStation hasn’t been in a better position commercially. But here lies the problem and why he needed to go.

PlayStation has lost its way over the last three years. Most PlayStation fans know it and so do the scribes who do great work at Push Square. They’ve always echoed the sentiment of PlayStation has been too quiet and that there are communication issues. These have been around since Jim Ryan took over. It’s imperative then that PlayStation now moves in a new direction next year and gets itself back on track. Not commercially, because they’re doing great. But back on the side of their customers. The alarming thing for Sony will be the uptake and growth in Game Pass, it’ll be the success of the Series S. You might laugh that off, but if you think Sony doesn’t need to be worried about one of its biggest rivals then that’s a little bit naive. To say it simply, we don’t know much about the future of PlayStation beyond Spiderman 2 in terms of its game line-up. It’s been an alarming discourse that live-service games are coming and nothing much beyond that right now. The same could be said about Nintendo and Xbox who have their own ilk of videogame styles but are heading in their own directions to great success.

But getting back to the point, however, you remember Jim Ryan’s stint at PlayStation. We’re not going to know the full story until this generation is over. Ultimately, Jim Ryan’s work as CEO probably sees itself through to the latter end of this generation in terms of how he’s run the ship and the direction it’s heading in. But what I will say, is that this is great news for PlayStation fans that are disillusioned with PS5 right now. Those fans who want more reasons for why they bought a PS5 in the first place. With the change now taking place, we might see PlayStation come back to the table in terms of its communication with fans and a full blowout of what’s to come from its games with the PS5 Pro. This could be the reset Sony needs at the top to get them sailing back in the right direction again. For PlayStations fans. This is the change people want. For Sony, it’s the one they needed to make right now because of a resurgent Nintendo and Microsoft and to continue their dominance potentially as the market leader.

It’s the great reset at PlayStation then. Let’s just hope that greatness doesn’t continue to wait for fans and they start firing on all cylinders again.

PlayStation 5 Has Competition on All Fronts

PlayStation 5 Has Competition on All Fronts

If Sony has told us anything this year with their anti-consumer moves. It’s that Microsoft has an opportunity to pick up a lot of steam off the back of the great exclusives it has in the pipeline. We all know Spiderman 2 is going to sell loads. It’s an amazing game for Sony to have but we don’t know much more of what is next in a generation from Sony’s point of view that has been rather disappointing.

As any PlayStation fan, they’ll agree to the extent that we haven’t seen the best of Sony yet. Of course, that is crazy in itself because we all know when Sony is at it they do great things. But with Nintendo on the horizon. It looks to take on Sony with its next hardware. Fighting for the third parties that I said it would just a few months back and matching them in performance for a handheld hybrid. It really seems like gaming is going to get even more competitive for the market leader Sony. In a sense, that’s fantastic news for players everywhere because Sony has been pretty out of touch with Sony fans and well, options are good.

We all know, that when Sony is on top of the world and doing incredibly well they make some questionable decisions. We saw it with the PS3 era and we’re seeing it this generation with a few things as well. PS4 has been a large part of Sony’s strategies. That’s a bit of a weird one when they had to backtrack and continue to support that platform. All because it fits into their onboarding strategy for the PS5. Then you have Xbox which has clearly moved on. In terms of Xbox, they haven’t just written this generation off they’re out to put a positive spin on the brand and go big next generation when the dust has settled on this one.

All around the gaming opinion is swinging favorably back to Xbox. Starfield has helped and a potential generational leap for racers with the next Forza will too. Microsoft might just be finding its feet again. This is at a time when we need them to be aggressive in their approach to competition with Sony. Anything that benefits competition and players everywhere. I’ve always supported it. I also feel that Nintendo is going to absolutely dominate the Japanese market and really match Sony in sales. I think the fact that they’re going for performance means Nintendo really does want the best for its players and took Nintendo Switch performance issues to heart. Not only that though, they’re also going to fix the joy-con drift. If that’s not a sign of Nintendo meaning business next generation for them I don’t know what is.

It’s going to be interesting then come the end of the year. Where we all stand, especially from a Nintendo fan point of view when we hear more.

PlayStation Has An Atreus Problem

PlayStation Has An Atreus Problem

There is no doubt whatsoever that God of War: Ragnorok was a great videogame. Everything about it improved on the original vision. The major problem which I think you will find many PlayStations fans agreeing with is that based on their playthrough of the sequel Atreus has become a bit of an annoying problem.

I think when you factor in that this is the character that is going to push the God of War franchise going forward. Unless a major transformation happens with Atreus that makes the game-play much more satisfying then any proposed future DLC that has the potential to focus on that character would be cause for some concern.

However, the caveat to that is that with every character there is a potential for growth. That growth is going to have to dramatically transform Atreus. To the point, he becomes unrecognizable going forward. Otherwise, any proposed follow-up might be hindered by the fact that PlayStation fans won’t be too fussed about it.

Kratos has been a mainstay in PlayStation over the years. He’s also a character that is very difficult to replace. That is a conundrum of its own. How does the torch get handed over with this one? God of War is probably one of PlayStation’s much-loved franchises. It’s an old-school series. It’s crazy to think it’s one where the future of the franchise is not so clear.

Proposed DLC much rumoured to expand on that on PlayStation 5 is going to have a lot of keen eyes on it. With even more potential scrutiny at its door if Santa Monica doesn’t get it right. Obviously, I have faith they will. But it’s going to be interesting what the future entails for this particular game series and solving that unique problem.

Xbox is About to Get Serious

Xbox is About to Get Serious

Whatever your platform preference, know this. This industry benefits highly from a competitive Microsoft which is investing in the Xbox platform. After Starfield, that’s exactly what the Redmond firm continues to do with its software slate. Sony needs that competition because it has been anti-consumer arguably recently. That software will come and it’s going to transform the platform’s reputation over the next few years.

Everyone still sees Xbox as a brand for their infamous Xbox One launch and policies back in the day. The fact of the matter is many of those features whether we like it or not are implemented in platform generations today whether it be online games only or whatever. The only difference was Microsoft was ahead of the curb with it and Sony was able to naturally take advantage as being a white knight. Fast forward to now and they’re anything but that based on how they’re now running things. People are saying, the Activision court case has hindered Sony’s ability to reveal things. I don’t actually believe that’s true.

PlayStation needs this competition from Xbox because it benefits our industry and because of the direction PlayStation is heading in. No matter what you think of each platform’s way of doing things. Modern gaming has been on a bit of a downward trend in terms of innovation for a long time.

I mean, a focus on live service games, really? The jury is out on that one. Most of the highest-selling games are Call of Duty, GTA, or FIFA. The innovation that has transpired has been in the indie space. It’s gotten to the point where sequels are the bread and butter of gaming. You’re probably thinking, well it depends on what games you play. But let’s not pretend that games are better these days than they ever were. If that was the case, everyone wouldn’t be selling us remakes of other remakes with many getting on that bandwagon lately. It’s also been pretty disappointing with sequels of existing franchises as well.

So you’re probably wondering where Microsoft fits into this. I actually think the line-up that Microsoft has coming is more varied than it has ever been. From a game-play point of view as well as for the amount of genres they’re covering. It’s with that belief that I feel that Microsoft has really set up Xbox to do incredibly well over the next few years. Now I don’t proclaim to say that Microsoft is going to be the saviour of the gaming industry. Not by a long shot. But what I am saying is that an industry where we have a strong Xbox and Nintendo gives consumers real choice. Whether it’s from a platform point of view or otherwise.

But as always, players everywhere when it comes to Xbox will believe it when they see it. This is what Microsoft has to do now and that’s continue to invest in the brand and push gaming to audiences with that increased investment. Studio acquisitions are one way of doing that but also focusing on standing out from the crowd could with innovative games set them on that right upward trajectory. The full story is yet to be written on this. It’s going to be an interesting few years ahead.

Xbox Enters The Building Like a Boss

Xbox Enters The Building Like a Boss

A lot of good news for Xbox lately. The big reason for that is not only Phil Spencer but the entire Xbox Team. They’ve been working around the clock to make our experiences a better one. Whether it’s the partnerships with Square Enix and Kojima Productions or the newly released Xbox dashboard which is a step in the right direction for the brand. It doesn’t stop there though.

Having Final Fantasy return with one of the biggest MMOs going in its ’14’ entry is a big thumbs up from ourselves and every Final Fantasy fan out there that prefers playing on an Xbox. If we can get others on the platform down the line as well as more Japanese support. It just goes to show that for anyone that likes Xbox, it is a viable platform for this kind of content. I think the interest is going to be pretty high.

It’s not about anyone else dropping the ball either. I’ve always felt that when it comes to third-party publishers, particularly Japanese games of any sort. It’s just too big of a geographic to not have on your platform. Xbox might not do well in Asia, but having that content on there accessible benefits those who would like to access it in multiple ways as well as Game Pass.

Obviously, it’s not just the Japanese that enjoy these games. They’re very big worldwide and you need that in your arsenal when you have a service like Game Pass for catalog diversity. So expect more partnerships like this one in the future.

When I say partnerships as well, I don’t think anything is off the table here. Now that Activision is pretty much settled. There is an appetite from the Xbox Team to get to work on other things. So don’t be surprised to see Xbox really grow as they’re really focusing on the experience right now. They’re probably walking into every building like Kiryu with a suitcase full of cash.

Will GTA VI Be a Digital Only Release?

Will GTA VI Be a Digital Only Release?

It’s not going to be popular with the majority of players out there. But I think that GTA VI is going to be a digital-only release. The reasons for that are based not just on the limitations of the Blu-ray disc but the possible ambitions for the next entry in the GTA universe.

I just think the trajectory that gaming has been on with more announcements of games going digital-only. As well as the potential May-June release date of 2024 for a potential and much-rumored release date for this game. The time scale to go to publish on Disc would be short. I also think publishers are pushing digital-only. We have major companies like Sony really pushing the digital aspect of their console with separate attachments for physical media.

It’s becoming more of a theme of how the industry is going to be moving forward. And although this is totally speculative it wouldn’t surprise me if GTA was one of those franchises that needed to be digital-only. If it did that, it would make a big statement in itself, but based on how Sony is focusing on digital aspects of their consoles in the future with disc attachments. It just feels this is where the industry is heading with them spearheading this movement. If it isn’t GTA that goes digital-only it will definitely be something else that’s just as big. And I think as players, we have to be ready to accept that ambitious games might struggle to fit because of just how big these game worlds are getting.

Disney Are Doing The Right Thing...

Disney Are Doing The Right Thing…

Nope, we’re not talking about Disney’s decision to replace the dwarfs in the live-action of Snow White. But in fact, we’re talking about their cutting down of Marvel and Star Wars content at least on the TV anyway as in the gaming sphere it’s full steam ahead. It’s not going to be a popular opinion but the oversaturation and just poor management from some of these superhero movies coming out is just unreal. Even DC has it wrong over there. But let’s get back to Marvel, shall we?

We have a Superhero problem. For whatever reason people are just not choosing to keep up with these movie universes. The reason for that is that everyone is doing it and there is no innovation going on here at all. And there’s so much you have to do to keep up with it.

Now Disney has come out and said the reason for it is because there are too many TV shows featuring the heroes. Yep, and not only that but let’s be honest the writing quality has taken a dive too. It’s gotten so bad that DC is having to reboot and go back to the drawing board. I just don’t know how we get back to the quality. Can someone give Christopher Nolan a call?

I mean with the hiatus that Star Wars has had. We’re hoping that it comes back stronger. It certainly looks like the attention for Marvel and DC is turning to gaming. We have Iron Man, Wolverine, Wonder Woman, Spiderman, and Black Panther all ongoing projects and it seems to me that the attention is turning to gaming for our superhero output. Which isn’t a bad thing.

But getting back to the point, there is a reason why people aren’t going to the cinema. Costs are one thing, but mostly, everything arrives on Disney Plus in due time anyway, or Sky Cinema for DC stuff. I just caught up with three movies for £8. If I went to the cinema (which I wouldn’t anyway) and watched them all at their respective times it would be nearly £30. Big difference there. Plus gaming is getting more accessible and stories are more easily to be followed.

I think Disney sees the success Sony is having with Spiderman, and well, you know what that means. It means we’ll have some of that, please.
