Premium Editions Are Optional But Necessary

Premium Editions Are Optional But Necessary

One of the things you are probably wondering is what are these premium editions about and how they affect me. The good news is that their an extension of some of your favorite videogames and a revenue maker in regards to the sustainability of Game Pass. It really is an optional avenue for players who want to support developers and you know what it’s not hurting anyone and here is why.

You might say well, premium editions are getting early access to Game Pass titles five days earlier. There seems to be some sort of weird focus on that as of late and I am not entirely understanding the angle. Game Pass is still day one for all titles that you get as part of your subscription. The premium upgrade is an incentive for those who want to spend more to access more content and have the ability to access the game a little earlier. But the relevancy is entirely separate. I will not entertain these thoughts where people say it’s bad for gaming or that it’s not right.

Microtransactions are having more of an effect on everyday modern gaming than these premium editions ever will. That’s a fact and a reality. People complain, why are there remakes? Where is the innovation? The consumer holds all the keys to how the gaming industry moves forward. If there’s something you don’t like about something don’t buy into it. It’s that simple.

I also think in regards to the premium editions as well. They’re an extension to Game Pass. An entirely optional one at that. I personally don’t have a problem with them myself, my concerns are more about microtransactions but rather than complain about it I’ll just highlight it and move on. But hey, if you are going to spend your money on that all power to you.

I just don’t understand how people think they’re smarter because they choose not to buy the Premium editions or whatever. At the end of the day, people will spend their money in whatever way they want to and you are certainly not going to persuade them otherwise so why the waffle? Being smart doesn’t come into it. In fact, making a decision based on your enjoyment of a hobby that’s going to entertain you for hours is a commendable one at that. I don’t like how some people have this high-horse attitude about them. They need to sit down and give their head a wobble.

But getting back to the point, premium editions are entirely optional and don’t have any effect on the game. You could argue about microtransactions and the way they’re harming modern gaming. Now that deserves your every attention. But yeah, it is what it is. We play games, we have fun, we move on. Enjoy.

Superman Legacy Under James Gunn is Necessary

When news broke that Henry Cavill was being replaced by a new actor. Unlike most of the internet, I was happy about it. Man of Steel for what it is is not a real Superman movie in my eyes. The destruction of a whole city is not credible in the whole structure of a character that was designed to protect and to be honest, it was just a movie or a vision that I couldn’t get behind.

I guess growing up with Christoper Reeve as Superman really empowered the character to the point that we knew exactly what he should be. A vision of hope.

When Superman Legacy got announced. I was happy, not because we’re revisiting the same story of humble beginnings for a hero that has had so many cover that story before. Essentially, because it brings back the core principles of the character with the original suit. It also brings back the real Superman to modern audiences as we’ve never seen him before.

Don’t get me wrong, I do like Henry Cavill. He is The Witcher. Nothing will compare no matter how people try to shake that character up. But as Superman, I just don’t think the way that story portrayed itself really helped Henry Cavill to be the Superman that we come to know and love. And consequently, I don’t believe for one minute that any follow-up movies would have helped build upon the legacy of his character.

Let’s be honest, DC has been a bloody mess of late. The Flash and other movies show just how bad a direction they’ve been heading. This reboot has to count for something and starting with Superman again will hopefully allow DC to create a narrative that absolutely resonates with its audience and the comics. It’s been too long since we’ve had more than a good Superman movie. The property deserves so much more love because Batman is something that DC has got more right than wrong.

Bringing in James Gunn will allow Superman to be what he is. A better version of himself in the modern era. The revisit to this character is absolutely essential and this new direction is absolutely necessary for Superman because they just haven’t been able to capitalize truly on his identity and true nature. Hopefully, this fixes that and we see a version of Clark Kent/Superman that really just works.

AI is Going to Transform Entertainment

AI is Going to Transform Entertainment

AI is a scary thing, that’s what people warn us all the time. But if controlled, and handled in the right way it can do some pretty incredible things also. As it has done by mimicking voices to a level that you’d recognize as authentic from some of the best in the business. You’re probably wondering now Craig, where are you going with this? Well, voice work and music is a key component of entertainment.

Imagine your favorite artist sounding just as good as they did years ago live or otherwise. Also imagine, a talented actor or actress in gaming being able to still be part of ongoing work and royalties being paid if they sadly passed on. That work would continue to thrive years into the future. Of course, we all know how dangerous AI can be, but the benefits are often overlooked in how it’s going to make our entertainment and world better. We just have to make sure it doesn’t get into the wrong hands to the point that we’re all in mortal danger. That’s a very human concern.

But getting back to the good that can come from AI. it’s going to transform writing, it’s already being implemented by Ubisoft for instance in the gaming industry. It will very much likely help so much more than we can even fathom yet.

We can all see the bad in things, that’s a very easy thing to do. Being precautionary is a human instinct and always has been. That’s one of the reasons why I am cautious but optimistic about what can be achieved here when it comes to AI. I am astounded by its potential and how great things could come from it that better help us all in entertainment and out of it.

AI could do a lot of good in a world that needs that next evolutionary step. We just have to make sure that we’re still very much in control. Even technology companies are being cautious, it’s the right thing to do when it comes to any new technology. We cannot allow intellectuals more advanced than us to outwit us or even doom us. But if we’re taking the philosophical view we have to evolve to better our situations at some point. Where humans don’t have the answers, it’s clear that AI will help in many ways to make us all take that next important step no matter what industry it happens to be in.

Game Over for Xbox?

Game Over for Xbox?

Well, who would’ve seen this coming? The UK has blocked the Activision purchase. So where does that leave Xbox? Well, on the ropes for the moment that is for sure. But one of the things that Xbox has done absolutely no favors to themselves. Is the fact that they cannot seem to ship their in-house self-published titles.

Sure, we have Redfall coming in May. That’s all well and good but Xbox has not made it easy for primary Xbox players to trust that the games are coming. Does that have an effect on the overall reputation of the Xbox brand? I think it does, especially for regulators. Not only is Xbox not relentless enough, but they’re also pretty much letting Sony have it all their own way. Call it mismanagement, call it incompetence. Call it whatever you like. As a fan of all consoles. I’ve never seen a gaming company as large as the Xbox be this bad frankly.

Something has to give, Xbox fans are demanding better and more timely releases of what has been a generation that has been all promises but no fulfillment. You may say I am being harsh, you’re allowed to have that opinion. But when it comes to it, Xbox just seems to be all over the place. Gears of War is in disarray, Halo Infinite was not good enough for the money that went into it. Fable is years off. It’s just a flipping nightmare on Xbox right now.

Then you have Sony, which has absolutely played a blinder. They’ve continued to organically grow while also managing to purchase Bungie. The biggest thing about that and what stood them in good stead was keeping it multi-platform. Sure, it was a clause for Bungie to ever join forces with Sony in the first place. But with all the little other acquisitions that Sony has made without jeopardizing their reputation. It’s pretty easy to understand and know which company has been in this business longer.

Xbox now has to come away from this feeling a bit roughed up. Be under no illusions though, I still think Microsoft will find a way. They simply have to. This is the biggest deal and a seismic acquisition and they have everything hinging on it, as does Activision. If it doesn’t happen, my god, can you imagine the response Microsoft will have to make to rectify the absolute embarrassment of this?

Everyone is saying, well, it’s just Call of Duty. No, it’s not just about one game. There is a bigger picture to this. One that we all cannot fathom completely ourselves because we don’t have all the information. But without a doubt, this could go two ways now. We could see a more aggressive Xbox, or we could see support wane from Microsoft. I hope it’s the former.

My belief is they will back Xbox because they’ve simply invested so much money into it. In any business, you don’t just give up based on one obstacle or if you’ve come to an impasse. I believe Xbox will respond to this, they will fight it, and it’s going to continue to be quite the slugfest.

I am anticipating a response from Microsoft and Xbox that will set things in motion for things to come. No more time for niceties, it’s time to compete again with Sony and set up a clear direction for where the Xbox brand in the future intends to go. If that means, competing on all fronts for exclusives and the like. Then, that might be where it needs to go.

Digital is Mainstream

Digital is Mainstream

One of the things I wanted to talk about today is the impact digital is having across all gaming platforms. PlayStation for instance now has plans for you to be able to trade your digital games and set your prices in a marketplace of sorts. This is one of the things I discussed a few years ago when I launched this website.

It’s a step in the right direction for digital. Which is mainstream and has been mainstream for a long time now anyway. I know people like physical, but can we just admit to ourselves that with the huge patches, with nothing actually on the disc and patches you have to download anyway. It might as well be a digital copy.

I came to this conclusion a long time ago. This is why initially I was digital with my PlayStation 5 and I have continued that momentum on Xbox. It’s just more than convenience these days and the fact that it’s Sony that is acknowledging that first being the leading gaming platform. Just sets a precedent like you wouldn’t believe.

With sales now being more readily available. The costs of buying digital are going down. You might pay more on launch day. But if you find you can wait, it’s very possible you get a better deal. It’s something that I believe could take digital to the next level if what is being proposed comes to fruition.

Are PlayStation Big-Budget Exclusives Sustainable?

Are PlayStation Big-Budget Exclusives Sustainable?

Kept you waiting, huh?

There is a lot of talk about Game Pass potentially being unsustainable without any real merit really. In reality, it’s sustained by one of the biggest tech companies in the world in Microsoft. One of the things that’s interesting to me personally is the shift in how Sony is moving into other territories in entertainment to help themselves.

For example, The Last of Us is getting its own TV series served up by HBO Max in the USA and in the UK, Sky. It’s quite remarkable really how times have changed since the Xbox One days. TV was a bad thing back then, but now, along with other initiatives that Sony has gotten involved in. It could be substantially helping their case for making the games that PlayStations fans know and love bigger and better. While also upping the profitability margins for them all the same and making them all important highly renowned single-player games much more sustainable.

You may say to me, well Craig, aren’t these games selling huge anyway? And I’d agree, but I’d also politely tell you just how expensive year on year these PlayStation-exclusive games are getting to sustain.

I can also mention the fact that there is a clear ‘new direction’ in Sony’s attempt to use and maximize its intellectual properties to new levels. You could also say, the very direction to head to live service and much more story-based multi-player games are really going to help the cause as well.

In a way, it’s safe to say it’s good news because PlayStation fans will continue to see the best single-player games, but also new ways in which Sony will want to maximize each IP. We’re seeing that with The Last of Us, but as announced recently, that’s also happening with Grand Turismo now as well.

In a way, it’s a very strategic move by Sony bosses. It’s something that probably needed to be done but at the same time, it pushes the envelope for the business and continues to allow them to manoeuvre in a way that is competitive not only with Nintendo but also Xbox as well.

All in all, it’s good news that PlayStation is heading in this direction for its future. I also think as long as Sony doesn’t lose sight of just what made PlayStation great in the first place. Then, they really won’t have anything to worry about in terms of keeping their fans happy.

The Future of Nintendo is Coming

The Future of Nintendo is Coming

It looks to be a significant year for Nintendo with the Switch set to be in a period of winding down. We still have a lot of great games to look forward to. Fire Emblem Engage, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to name a few. The Nintendo Switch is going out with a bang then. But as a platform, the sales are slowing down and there seems to be an indication that come the year 2024 we should be seeing the next thing from Nintendo.

I think one of the smartest things Nintendo could do is build on the success they’ve had with the Nintendo Switch. With reports that a Nintendo Switch Pro was in the works but then abandoned because of unforeseen circumstances. It really feels like whatever Nintendo had cooking behind the scenes has now turned into a fully fledged next generation hybrid console.

No matter what form the next Nintendo console takes. I believe that the success of the Nintendo Switch will have galvanized the company to the point were building on the success of 120 million Nintendo Switch consoles sold has to be the objective. In many ways, they can do this on an operating system level, improving the Nintendo Network, allowing friends, messages, more apps and even getting into streaming. And please Nintendo, a new streamlined Nintendo e-shop.

The big thing for me above all is achievements of some sort. I think in whatever form Nintendo takes that aspect they can really have fun with it and make it very Nintendo. Innovation and building on what has gave them massive amounts of success would be the smartest possible move. If the Nintendo Switch Pro did get cancelled like it’s been suggested. Maybe, just maybe, the hybrid handheld and home console that has worked so well will stay. I just think from where Nintendo stands, they’ve really found their place again.

I also believe that we’re going to see a big boost in hardware capability for a handheld and home console hybrid. I think that’s been wanting for a while by Nintendo fans and I think with the improvements in chips on a mobile level that will be more possible than ever. Speaking about mobile, I think the next from Nintendo will take portability to another level with 5G support. I think come 2024 that will be made available a lot more in places especially around the UK.

I really feel like the next iteration of the Nintendo console formula will be absolutely massive not only for the company but for the fans as well. I believe we’re going to see a great software line-up as well. Maybe even a new Mario Kart, or even a new Mario game. I think on a software front they’ll want to start off as strongly as they did back in March 2017.

I guess the question for all of us is when will we hear more news about this? I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear rumblings by the end of this year. However, in what form I couldn’t tell you. I wouldn’t however, put it past Nintendo to surprise us in a big way at some point and I am expecting to see a more clearer picture by then of where we’re at.
