When news broke that Henry Cavill was being replaced by a new actor. Unlike most of the internet, I was happy about it. Man of Steel for what it is is not a real Superman movie in my eyes. The destruction of a whole city is not credible in the whole structure of a character that was designed to protect and to be honest, it was just a movie or a vision that I couldn’t get behind.
I guess growing up with Christoper Reeve as Superman really empowered the character to the point that we knew exactly what he should be. A vision of hope.
When Superman Legacy got announced. I was happy, not because we’re revisiting the same story of humble beginnings for a hero that has had so many cover that story before. Essentially, because it brings back the core principles of the character with the original suit. It also brings back the real Superman to modern audiences as we’ve never seen him before.
Don’t get me wrong, I do like Henry Cavill. He is The Witcher. Nothing will compare no matter how people try to shake that character up. But as Superman, I just don’t think the way that story portrayed itself really helped Henry Cavill to be the Superman that we come to know and love. And consequently, I don’t believe for one minute that any follow-up movies would have helped build upon the legacy of his character.
Let’s be honest, DC has been a bloody mess of late. The Flash and other movies show just how bad a direction they’ve been heading. This reboot has to count for something and starting with Superman again will hopefully allow DC to create a narrative that absolutely resonates with its audience and the comics. It’s been too long since we’ve had more than a good Superman movie. The property deserves so much more love because Batman is something that DC has got more right than wrong.
Bringing in James Gunn will allow Superman to be what he is. A better version of himself in the modern era. The revisit to this character is absolutely essential and this new direction is absolutely necessary for Superman because they just haven’t been able to capitalize truly on his identity and true nature. Hopefully, this fixes that and we see a version of Clark Kent/Superman that really just works.
